Attractions during the Bhutan Tour 4 days

We have shared details about the tourist cities you will explore in Paro and Thimphu below.

Paro

Taktsang Monastery

Taktsang Monastery (Tiger's Nest) is a very important religious site in Bhutan. It was established in 1692 at the cave where Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) was once believed to be meditated.

As per the locals, the rinpoche flew here on the back of a tigress. The monastery is located on a hilltop, around 3,120 meters above sea level. Travelers have to walk uphill for two hours to reach the monastery. The walk is gradual and scenic.

Drukgyel Dzong

The founder of Bhutan, Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, built Drukgyel Dzong in 1649. This dzong was built to celebrate Bhutan's victory over Tibetan invaders.

Therefore, it is also known as the Fortress of the Victorious Drukpa. The Drukgyel Dzong is located in the upper part of Paro Valley. Here, you will learn about the country's military history and resilience.

Kyichu Lhakhang Gompa

Kyichu Lhakhang is one of the oldest temples in Bhutan. It was built in the 7th century by the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo. He built this temple as a part of his 108 temples that he constructed across the Himalayas to suppress a demoness.

As per the legends, the demoness was trying to obstruct the spread of Buddhism. In this temple, you will explore many ancient relics, statues, wall paintings, and spiritual gems.

Paro Dzong (Rinpung Dzong)

Paro Dzong was built in 1646 on the foundation of an ancient 15th-century monastery. This place used to play a significant role as a defense post during wars.

Likewise, Paro Dzong is also an administrative center and a center of monastic education and governance. The archives of the dzong reflect the traditional Bhutanese carvings, towering walls, and beautiful courtyards.

National Museum of Bhutan (Ta Dzong)

Ta Dzong was built in 1649 as a watchtower to protect Paro Dzong. Later, it was changed to the National Museum of Bhutan. Inside the museum, you can explore an outstanding collection of historical artifacts, Bhutanese art, weapons, textiles, and history. Likewise, the museum also houses ancient thangkas, relics, and traditional masks.

Thimphu

National Memorial Chorten

Built in 1974, the National Memorial Chorten honors the third king of Bhutan, King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. The chorten represents the mind of the Buddha and is filled with religious paintings, relics, and sculptures. Today, the National Memorial Chorten is the spiritual hub for locals to perform daily prayers and rituals.

Changangkha Temple

Changangkha Lhakhang is another ancient Bhutanese temple built in the 12th century. The temple was built to spread the Drukpa Kagyu lineage of Buddhism.

Local families bring their newborns here for blessings and receive their names. The temple is on a ridge from where you can see a beautiful view of Thimphu Valley. You will explore traditional murals, prayer wheels, and serene courtyards here.

Drubthob Monastery (Zilukha Nunnery)

Drubthob Monastery is also popularly known as Zilukha Nunnery. A revered Tibetan saint and engineer built this monastery. It serves as a nunnery and a center for meditation and Buddhist education for women.

The monastery's location is serene and ideal for practicing Buddhism. As the Drubthob Monastery is located near Tashichho Dzong, you can also visit here.

School of Arts and Crafts

The School of Arts and Crafts is dedicated to preserving and promoting Bhutan's 13 traditional art forms, which are known as Zorig Chusum in the local language.

The school was established in 1971 to train students in different Bhutanese art forms like sculpting, wood carving, painting, embroidery, mask making, etc.

It has ensured that traditional art forms are passed down through generations. Travelers can observe students do their work.

National Library

The National Library was established in 1967 to store ancient Bhutanese manuscripts, religious texts, and historical documents. The building looks like a traditional Bhutanese temple and houses the world's largest published book (a 5x7-foot photographic tome about Bhutan). You can see different historical photos and displays of traditional Bhutanese scripts here.

Traditional Paper Factory

As the name says, the Traditional Paper Factory preserves and promotes the ancient art of paper-making. It was built in 1990 to produce Des-sho, traditional Bhutanese handmade paper. These papers are used to write religious texts and ceremonies. You can see the paper-making process here and also buy unique products.

Folk Heritage Museum

The Folk Heritage Museum offers a glimpse of traditional Bhutanese rural life. It was opened in 2001 in a 19th-century three-story rammed earth farmhouse.

Best time

The best time to travel to Bhutan is between March to May and mid-September to November. These are transitional months, so the weather and climate are fantastic. You will also enjoy the tour in the summer/monsoon and winter seasons.

Every season has its features. Spring brings blue poppies, rhododendrons, orchids, and cherry blossoms. Summer and monsoon seasons come together. It is the hottest and high humidity time of the year.

Likewise, snowfall in winter covers the entire nation. Everything looks magical and stunning. Winter is the coldest time of the year, so travelers have to wear proper clothes to keep themselves warm.

Altitude sickness

Bhutan is one of the highest countries in the world. During this 4 day tour, you will travel to Paro and Thimphu, which is situated at 2,250 meters (7,382 ft) and 2,350 meters (7,710 ft) above sea level.

Likewise, Taktsang Monastery, aka the 'Tiger's Nest' located at 3,120 meters (10,236 ft), is the highest point you will touch during the tour. Altitude sickness risk increases when you go beyond 2,500 meters above sea level.

If you have any allergies, let us know. Likewise, drinking water is also widely available everywhere at a minimal cost.
